Frequently asked questions
How is GPA actually calculated?
GPA is a credit-weighted average, not a plain average of your grades. Each course's grade points are multiplied by its credit hours, those products are added up, and the total is divided by the total credit hours. So an A (4.0) in a 4-credit course pulls your average up more than an A in a 1-credit course.
Which grade points does this calculator use?
It uses the standard US unweighted 4.0 scale: A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D− = 0.7 and F = 0.0. A few US institutions add an A+ worth 4.3 or treat certain grades differently, so check your school's official scale if your transcript disagrees.
What's the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
This calculator produces an unweighted GPA, capped at 4.0, where an A is worth 4.0 in every course. Many US high schools also publish a weighted GPA that adds bonus points for honors, AP or IB classes, often on a 5.0 scale. If your school weights courses, calculate the unweighted figure here and then apply your school's bonus separately.
Can I use this for a cumulative GPA across several semesters?
Yes. A cumulative GPA is calculated the same way as a semester GPA, just over more courses. Add a row for every course you have taken, from every term, and the result is your cumulative GPA. Leave out pass/fail and transfer credits that your school excludes from the GPA.
Does this tool store or upload my grades?
